Stress is the Enemy!

Stress may be the enemy, but massage, and other healing therapies can be your friends. What is stress? In essence, it’s a state of emotional and mental strain due to adverse and demanding circumstances. Extremes forms of stress can lead to other issues, like anxiety, insomnia etc etc! Unfortunately it is ALL around us, but you don’t need to let it get you down. If we learn how to manage our stress and be nice to ourselves, life would be a whole lot easier! When you’re feeling stressed, make yourself aware of it, take a couple of breaths, talk to a friend but whatever you do don’t brush it under the carpet and pretend that everything is fine.

If I were to mention the word exam or traffic jam, bills, redundancy or running a household, how would you feel then? Beginning to feel just a little stressed out? Then massage could be for you. It will help you de-stress and enhance your overall ability to relax.

Research has shown that stress actually causes approximately 75% of all diseases and disorders. We can help ourselves lead a stress free life in many ways and one of these is by having regular massages. There are soooooo many to chose from; Swedish and Bamboo to Sports and Indian Head. There is one to suit everyone.

Those who fall prey to stress often complain that tension is stored in the shoulder, neck and head areas. I’d say about 95% of my customers ask me to concentrate on the upper back area. This is because when we are stressed we tend to hold our shoulders up closer to our ears, causing over contraction of our trapezius muscles. This causes tension, our muscle fibers to tighten and then the dreaded “knots” form. Massage is guaranteed to relieve these feelings giving you greater flexibility, as well as helping with any sleeping problems you may have.

One of the treatments  that I carry out is Indian Head Massage. It has been practiced in India for over a thousand years, originally by women who believed that massaging their heads with vegetable oils kept their hair healthy and strong. They were right. Massaging the scalp stimulates the flow of blood to the follicles, therefore improving nutrient uptake. Nowadays, the most common cause of poor blood flow is stress-generated muscle tension. By helping to dispel such tension, head massage not only improves the condition of your hair, but also provides an invaluable treatment for stress-related problems such as migraines, eye strain and anxiety.

The head, neck and shoulders are important energy centers within your body. If you are feeling stressed or angry, tension tends to accumulate. This can later show up as a stiff neck and shoulders, eyestrain and sometimes even hair loss. Indian Head Massage involves working with a firm and gentle rhythm to help un-knot blockages and relieve this uncomfortable build-up of tension. However, its effect is not just physical: it works on an emotional level too, calming the spirit, promoting relaxation and relieving stress. It truly is an utterly soothing treatment.

An ancient proverb states, “A happy mind is medicine; no better prescription exists.” I couldn’t agree more, I’ve seen it first hand. Often a client comes in to me super stressed and tense. Then, after the massage they are nearly floating out the door, all tension gone from their face and they appear so much happier. If we can help our mind become balanced our body will follow. People come to me, feeling worried,  depressed and sometimes distressed but they leave in a calmer and more relaxed frame of mind after just one session.

It is so important to take time out for YOU, from time to time. People can get caught up looking after everybody else, they tend to forget about themselves. Being stressed can lead to illness, so give yourself a break. Massage offers the means by which the individual can begin to get in touch with their own healing ability and therefore become happier and healthier within themselves. If we all had even a half an hour of massage a week, I am convinced, life would seem just a little bit sunnier.

Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can.
