Hi lovely readers I would like to introduce you to my very first installment of “MUA Focus”. I want to bring you a profile on many amazing makeup artists, both here in Waterford and all around Ireland. We are spoiled for choice when it comes to incredible makeup artists and I want to let you in on their favourite makeup, tips, and advice, straight from the their mouths to my blog. I also want to showcase their amazing skills and talent.
First up, is the amazing Matte to Metallic. Jennifer Donohoe and Ciara Clinton are the brains AND beauties behind this ever growing brand. They are best friends who grew up together, have a passion for makeup and are now running their own makeup academy in Dublin. They are so genuine and down to earth and they let us in on how they achieve their funky makeup looks through their social media channels, where they have over 25,000 followers between Facebook(Matte to Metallic), Instagram(MattetoMetallic, and Snapchat(“jennydonohoe283” and “ciciclinton”). They possess fantastic makeup skills, here’s some of their looks below.
Recently, the girls won “Best Beauty Blog” at the Irish Blogger Association Awards. This is a huge achievement, because it’s so hard to be recognized in the world of bloggers but Matte to Metallic stood out above the rest and scooped the award. I have no doubt it’s going to be the 1st of many for them, they are definitely ones to watch. The incredible makeup ranges, Makeup Revolution and Freedom Makeup London, recognized the girls talent and have recently announced them as brand ambassadors for their companies, which is just amazing! They have a lot of experience under their belt and have worked with some amazing companies, from Mac and Inglot to TV3 and the Wright Venue. I love their story; 2 Dublin girls who started out with a passion, never gave up and turned it into their dream career. They are a real inspiration for all young girls out there starting out in the makeup world.
I was lucky enough to hold a phone interview with the lovely Jen and here are the Q&A’s. (Yes I now have her number, no I won’t be stalking her with makeup questions at 2am, I swear)
Favourite Primer => Has to be Catrice Prime & Fine – I’ve tried them all and this works wonders for €5.59. It really refines the texture of the skin making it super smooth for foundation application. You need a little pea sized amount and your foundation lasts for hours and hours.
Favourite Foundation => This is hard, I love so many but it has to be Illamasqua skin base. It gives such great coverage without feeling too heavy on the skin. I like skin to look like skin, it’s one of my trademarks. It has a dewy texture but not too much and it works on all skin types! The shade range is huge a great plus too!
Favourite Highlight => Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in Perach Lights. Nothing beats this, it is my fave!!!
Favourite Eye shadows => Again there are so many great ones. I love MAC & my new faves are MUR from the iconic pallets. Super pigmented and blend beautifully with
such a great price point that’s so affordable for everyone’s budget
Favourite Mascara => Has to be Benefit Roller lash. The wand has intertwining fibres to grab each lash even the straightest of lashes it gives my lashes a great lift with no clumps and they look so full.
Favourite Lashes => They have to be Glam and Co Cosmetics Jasmine! I wear them so much, they are so full and black they make every look complete! And they are an Irish company – it’s great to support our own Irish girls. Well done to Aoife on her success.
Do you prefer cream or powder contour or do you do both? I’ve always loved powder, again I love my makeup to look natural and not over done. I only use cream under my cheekbones if I want it a little stronger for a night out. And always use a beauty blender to make it look flawless with no harsh lines.
What is your go to brush to apply foundation? A beauty blender. It makes everything flawless and seamless on the skin, and it fixes mistakes.
What is you favourite fluffy brush for blending eyeshadow? I could not live without my MAC 222 I use this in every single makeup I do! It has a tapered tip and allows for precise and more controlled blending!
If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?Has to be a highlighter! I have so many but I just adore Makeup
Revolution Pro Illuminator. Creates that natural touch of illumination
to the skin.
How did you come up with the name Matte to Metallic? We wanted something with 2 words one for each of us. Matte and metallic are eye shadow textures so we thought this was fun. One of our friends came up with the name – who’s matte and who’s metallic? We laugh about this, we still haven’t decided haha!!
What are your makeup must haves in your bag on a night out? Has to be lipgloss/lipstick and highlighter! They are what I love to
touch up on night out other wise you’d be in the mirror for the night.
What one piece of advice would you give to a make up artist or blogger trying to get their name out there? The best advice I could ever give and is so so important and it helped me so much is => to network, network until you can’t network anymore!
It’s key. You don’t know how someone you met 2 years ago can be the key to something in your career!
What are your top 3 skincare products? Charlotte Tilbury magic eye cream – does what is says on the tin. My ritual day and night, is my eye cream! This is the best I’ve ever
used! Bioderma Hyrdrabio Serum – it hydrates the skin which is what my
skin needs a lot of! Serums are so important in skin care. Freedom Glow
Tonic Glycolic Toner, as it contain hyaluronic acid and this is so
important for this skin!
If you could give one piece of advice to yourself 10 years ago, what would it be? Believe in your self more. Anyone can achieve anything is this life, you just just have to believe you will! And you will!!!
Are there any makeup artists either Irish or internationally who inspire you? Has to be Amber Dean! I have loved her work and creativity for years and I’m so glad to call her my really great friend now! I love lots of Irish Muas – it’s so hard to pick one each and everyone inspires me.
Are there any women in business who inspire you? Marissa Carter. What she has achieved is just amazing and being a mother too just goes to show what hard work and dedication can do! I love her work ethic and her personality! Also Katrina Kelly, creator of Push Makeup, she is such a positive person and I love how she conducts her
business. A real inspiration for me!
What is the one makeup tool you just couldn’t live without? Would have to be my beauty blender…I could not live without it!!!
What is your favourite makeup look? I love monochromatic / its using the same tone but different shades. I like the more grungy edgy side of makeup too, especially greys and things like reverse smokey eyes are so my thing!
And last but not least, could you share with us your favourite makeup tip or trick? My God I have many, hahaha. I love to keep the eyes open when blending or
placing colour, so I can see exactly where I’m placing shadows!
Well, I just want to go on a MAHOOOOOSIVE shopping spree now! I absolutely loved having the chat with Jen and I’ve learned great tips and advice. She is so friendly and easy to talk to! Huge thank you to Jen for taking the time out of her busy schedule to answer my questions and allow me to bring them to my readers!
