This is my 3rd edition of my MUA Focus Series on the blog, where I ask some of my favourite makeup artists questions we all want to know, their go to foundation, lashes, highlight, all that good stuff. It gives you the opportunity to get to know them a little bit better, see their style of makeup and maybe even learn a thing or two, all in the one place. Every time I do this series my “Makeup Wish List” just gets longer and longer and this time was no different. Tonight, Collette Griffin shares some great tips with us, her makeup must haves and, her advice for makeup artists starting out.
Collette is a local Waterford girl that has oodles of makeup know how. She trained part time for 8 months in the Institute of Beauty on Catherine Street, Waterford but she’s mostly self-taught…YouTube was her training. She watched tutorials day and night and she still does. She is doing makeup professionally 2 years now, since she left her job in Bausch and Lomb and is always attending masterclasses and workshops to keep her skills up to date.
I have been following her on social media for well over a year now and I think she is just stunning, her face and her personality…she is so lovely and down to earth and a must follow. I will leave all her social media links at the end. Throughout this post, there will be images of Collette’s work, so you can see for yourself just how good she is. I recently got my makeup done from Collette Griffin for my friends hen and MY GOD, the compliments I got!!! I had a seriously big head going around! I was thrilled with how it turned out, Collette nailed the look I wanted and it lasted all night, well into the early hours of the morning. During the makeup application we were talking non stop and I was asking her LOADS of questions and her opinions on certain brushes, makeup etc. She is a fountain of knowledge and has a makeup collection TO DIE FOR!!!
Collette does one on one makeup lessons, where you can tailor the lesson to exactly what you want, blending eyeshadow, perfecting liner, nailing contour, anything and everything. You can do it on yourself or bring along a model. She sells vouchers as well, so it would actually make a beautiful present for any makeup addict.
Makeup Lessons with Collette – Top of my 2017 New Years Resolutions!!!
Get the notepads ready!!!
1. Favourite Primer?
Mac Prep and Prime Skin Base Visage.. I love this primer because it reduces the redness that I have going on and it evens out my skin tone making my skin ready for foundation .
2. Favourite Foundation?
Nars Weightless Luminous All Day Foundation. I love this for all day wearing, for example if I have a wedding or a night out. I’m on the oily side, so I find this wears well and my oil doesn’t seem to peep through for at least 4 to 5 hours. My shade when I wear tan is Barcelona and no tan days I wear Santa Fe.
3. Favourite Highlight?
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in the shade Luminous Light. This is bloody divine, it’s not so in your face as other highlights out there but it does the job. I love it on brides, as it looks like you’re glowing from within. So gorgeous!!!
My all time favourite eyeshadows is a hard one but if I had to pick it would be Melt Cosmetics. OMG they are so pigmented and they blend so well.. just fantastic!
5. Favourite Mascara?
It’s from Mac and it’s the Extended Play Gigoblack Lash. I love this because of the brush, it’s so skinny that it catches every single Lash. This is very important to me as I wasn’t blessed with lashes unfortunately, so I need all the help I can get.
6. Favourite lashes?
Ardell Demi wispies, great for day or natural looks. I also double stack them when I have a night out, so that gives me a more fuller look.
7. Do you prefer cream or powder contour or do you do both?
I prefer to powder contour, as it’s quicker and easier, but I have lately started to cream contour using the Cream Bronzer from Chanel ( Soleil Tan De Chanel) I love this because it’s so easy to use and it never gets muddy looking.
8. What is your go to brush/sponge to apply foundation?
I love both brushes and sponges for applying foundation. My favourite brush is the round head kabuki from Nima Brushes and my favourite sponge is the Beauty Blender. If I had to pick between the 2 it would have to be the beauty blender hands down! Because I have such large pores I really find that the sponge presses the foundation into the pores and filling them automatically giving me a smooth surface.
9. What is your favourite fluffy brush for blending eyeshadows?
My favourite blender brush is the Sigma E35…this was my first ever blending brush, it can be got on cloud 10 beauty, just to let you know.
10. If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
OMG this is so hard to answer!!! It’s between my brows and skin. I think I’ll go with my Pure Pressed Powder from Jane Iredale..this is a foundation and powder together..it gives great coverage and wears off really well. It doesn’t last that long but it’s easy and quick and it covers all my imperfections plus it’s mineral makeup so you don’t have any talc or parabens that you can find in other powders… I get mine from the beauty salon down in the King Fisher.
11. Is there any product that’s relatively inexpensive that you swear by?
NYC liquid liner is by far the best liquid liner out there, and it’s €2.50.. bargain!
12. What are your makeup must haves, in your bag, on a night out?
I love rimmel stay matt powder to get rid of shine, lipstick and liner and duo glue just in case we have any lash malfunctions.Oh and bronzer, which would be Give Me Sun from Mac Cosmetics.
13. What one piece of advice would you give to a makeup artist trying to get their name out there?
My advice to anyone starting out there is to practice practice practice, and try and do all different kind of skin types and eye shapes. Doing makeup on yourself and doing it on someone else is very different. If you have to do work for free then so be it, that experience will do wonders for you. Also, social media is huge now, so you need to be on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. The more people see your work, the more work opportunities are going to come your way.
14. What are your Top Three Skincare Products?
Top 3 skincare products are ZoSkinHealth Oil Control Cleanser, ZoSkinHealth Hydrofirming Eye Cream. These can all be got in Gensis Clinic. Avst from Environ, this is my moisturiser. I’m using this around 8 yrs on and off. I love these 2 skincare ranges. Environ can be got at the King Fisher also.
15. If you could give yourself one piece of advice ten years ago, what would it be?
Chill out lol… I’m much more relaxed in myself now and I think that shows in my work and life, God I used to take everyone and everything so seriously…lighten up and enjoy your family and friends xxx Make memories everyday
16. Are there any makeup artists either Irish or International, who inspire you?
Local makeup artists that I love are Laura Dempsey and Diane Everett. Kerry Ryan and Lynsdey Waring are fantastic also. Internationally I love Lisa Eldridge, she’s an amazing artist and business woman. She’s my inspiration
17. Are there any women in business who inspire you?
The Pixiwoo Sisters, aka Real Techniques Brushes founders, are who I aspire to be along with Lisa Eldridge, I love these 2 sisters because they are real women with kids and hectic lifestyles just like all of us, and what they had accomplished in their career so far is truly remarkable. Between their brush line and YouTube channel, they are just amazing…if I had a fraction of their success I would be the happiest lady ever xx
18. What is the one makeup tool you just couldn’t live without?
Awh it would have to be a beauty blender, why?? Because you can do pretty much all your base work with a sponge…primer, foundation, concealer, cream contour .. so useful
19. What is your favourite makeup look?
My favourite makeup look on me is a red lip and winged liner with full lashes. This is my go to look when I’m in a makeup funk…works very time
20. And last but not least, could you share with us yor favourite makeup tip or trick?
My top tip is for false lash application, cut them in halves. I always used to struggle with putting on lashes, I tried cutting them in halves and applying them in 2 sections and omg what a difference it made!!! Now I’m an absolute legend at applying lashes on myself xx
Well, I really enjoyed that q&a session, I hope you did too. If you’re not already following Collette on social media, you’re seriously missing out.
