Welcome to my fifth edition of MUA Focus – a series I’m running where I ask some of my favourite makeup artists questions we all want to know, like their favourite lashes, foundation, eyeshadow. They let us in on their favourite makeup tips and share their advice for makeup artists trying to get their name out there. I include photos of their work, so if you’re looking for some makeup inspiration DON’T GO ANYWHERE!!! No, seriously, don’t!
Tonight’s edition is all about the stunning Laura Dempsey from Waterford. I’m sure you’re all following her already and if not, hang your head in shame, she is without a doubt one of the most talented makeup artists in Ireland and throughout this post you’ll see why.
Laura always had a natural flare for makeup but she really blossomed after studying makeup artistry in Blackrock Institute, Dublin. Her skills and raw talent grew from strength to strength and it wasn’t long before one of the biggest makeup brands in the world, Urban Decay, snatched her up. She worked on their counter in Debenham’s, City Square, Waterford, and she was becoming increasingly popular with girls and women wanting her to paint their faces. So much so, that Laura decided to bite the bullet and go out on her own. I have such admiration for her for following her dreams and knowing exactly what she wanted to do at such a young age. Being self employed myself, I know it’s not easy, but she clearly made the right decision because now she has her own makeup room in Colm Morrissey’s Hairdressers in Tramore, Waterford and she is on the rise!!!
Laura was probably the first the person I started following on Snapchat (laudempmakeup). She often does tutorials, shares her thoughts on makeup products and she’s so so funny. She’s honest and says it how it is, and I like that a lot about her. I adore Laura’s Instagram account, she’s very interactive with her followers and all her photos are just amazing. She often does makeup challenges, choosing a different look for each day and encourages her followers to join in. It’s a fantastic idea for anyone who feels stuck in a rut with their makeup or is looking for some new ideas or to connect with other artists.
Find Laura on Instagram here => LauDempseyMua and Facebook here => Laura Dempsey Makeup Laura also has a YouTube channel and it’s definitely worth subscribing too => Laura Dempsey Makeup. She did a very funny one recently where her boyfriend did her makeup, here’s the link, Boyfriend Does my Makeup Tag, just watch it!!! And on top of ALL THAT she also holds masterclasses, so keep an eye out on her social media for one near you…is there nothing this girl can’t do?! I asked Laura lots of questions, did she mention any of your favourites??? Notepads at the ready!!!
1. Favourite Primer
My favourite primer is definitely Strobe Cream by Mac! It’s super hydrating on the skin but not greasy, plus it’s illuminating.
2. Favourite Foundation
I have so many but I think Mac Studio Fix foundation because it’s so full coverage but doesn’t cake on my skin.
3. Favourite Highlight
Inglot Sparkle dust 02… It’s so bright, looks amazing in photos.
4. Favourite Eyeshadows
I think either Makeup Geek or ABH.. they practically blend themselves!
5. Favourite Mascara
I really like the Code Beautiful Mascara, it’s so lengthening but it’s about €30 so instead I would have to say Lash Princess by Essence, it’s around €3.50 and just as good!
6. Favourite Lashes
Aurora by Glam&Co.. they are absolutely huge, have a thin lash band and can be used up to 20 times!
7. Do you prefer cream or powder contour or do you do both?
I used to do both but now I usually just do powder contour, I’m trying to reduce the amount of makeup I put on my skin and your contour looks the same both ways anyway so you definitely use less product with just powder!
8. What is your go to brush/sponge to apply foundation?
I really like both Blank Canvas’s e36 brush and also their Beauty Blender for apply foundation!
9. What is you favourite fluffy brush for blending eyeshadow?
I can’t pick between the Buff&Blend BB08 and Inglot’s 6ss, both are amazing!
10. If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Cailyn’s Brow Gel in shade Cocoa… my ultimate Holy Grail
11. Is there any product that’s relatively inexpensive that you swear by?
Penney’s Lipliners! Only €1.50 and so creamy and long-lasting
12. What are your makeup must haves in your bag on a night out?
I always carry Makeup Forever’s HD foundation stick and Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Powder for quick top ups, although I rarely ever top my makeup up on nights out!
13. What one piece of advice would you give to a make up artist trying to get their name out there?
Social Media is your best friend for promoting your work but also word of mouth, make sure you give every client your best work and make sure they are 100% happy with their makeup. Clients are literally a walking advertisement for your business!
14. What are your top 3 skincare products?
Nip and Fab’s Glycolic Daily Cleansing pads, The Body Shop Himilayan Charcoal Mask and Lancome’s Genefique Sheet Masks keep my skin on point!
15. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
To practice really hard and also look after your skin better!
16. Are there any makeup artists either Irish or internationally who inspire you?
There’s so many, I love Jamie Genevieve for grungy looks and Nikki Wolff for more editorial looks (Nikki_makeup on Instagram) and Irish wise, Keilidh Cashell is killing the game, she’s so talented!
17. Are there any women in business who inspire you?
I really admire Oonagh O Hagan, she’s the MD of Meaghers Pharmacy!
18. What is the one makeup tool you couldn’t live without?
My ABH eyebrow brush… it’s so amazing, no other brow brush I’ve used has compared to it!
19. What is your favourite makeup look?
A Warm smokey eye look with glitter, plenty of highlighter and nude lips!
20. And last but not least, could you share with us your favourite makeup tip or trick?
My favourite makeup tip is to make sure you have clean brushes!! I cannot stress enough how much of a difference this makes to your makeup! Dirty makeup brushes make for dirty looking makeup plus it’s so bad for your skin!
I really enjoyed that Q and A, and as always, my makeup list has gotten so much longer. Loved the point Laura made about cream and powder contour and trying to reduce the amount of makeup she’s putting on her skin…really really good tip. I hope you found that helpful and her work inspiring.
Make sure you’re following Laura on social media, she’s a breath of fresh air. Laura is a girl from the country side but that certainly doesn’t stop her working on big names. The fact she did makeup on the ultimate #girlboss Marissa Carter just proves how far her talent reaches. To book in with Laura, message her Facebook page, you won’t regret it!!!
Huge thank you to Laura for taking part.Is there any questions I didn’t ask that you would like to see in my future editions??? Who is your favourite makeup artist? Who would you like to see featured next? Let me know!
