For tonight’s Make Up Artist Focus we have the lovely and amazingly talented Abigail Roche from Glamour Puss Makeup. This series is where I ask some of my favourite make up artists the questions we all want to know – their go to products, their go to brushes and lots more.
I have been following Abigail’s work with ages now and it just baffles me that she doesn’t have thousands upon thousands of followers online. It just goes to show that numbers on social media don’t really mean anything because she is an unreal MUA. She has ridiculously good make up skills and consistently posts high quality images of her work, which you will see through out this post. I think she is one of the most underrated make up artists in Waterford, and deserves so much more recognition for her work, so if you’re not following her and love make up please go give her a like and follow. Her work is to DIE FOR!!!! I’ll leave all her links at the end.
Abigail always had a passion for make up since a very young age. Her mother loved it, so she often played with her Mam’s makeup and her creative side began from there. She worked for years in a factory until she became redundant and at age 42 decided to go for her dream of becoming a full time make up artist. First, she trained in Airbrush Make Up then went back to college in The Institute of Beauty, here in Waterford, where she studied Fashion, Media and Photography Make Up. She is now ITEC and CIBTAC qualified, with an array of extra courses under her belt including bridal workshops with Kate McCormack and Masterclasses with Jeanette Cronin.
I think Abigail’s journey from where she was to where she is now doing something she absolutely adores is truly inspirational and very commendable. A
1. What is your favourite primer & why?
I like Mac Oil Control Lotion, as I have really oily skin and it helps me from looking like as a greasy mess! The travel size is only €10 and would last ages.
2. Favourite Foundation to use on dry skin/oily skin/mature skin?
I love MAke Up Forever HD foundation for dry and mature skin and I use Estee lauder doublewear on myself. It’s the only foundation I’ve tried that combats the oil on my skin. I usually mix Mac Face and Body with it to stop the flashback.
3. Favourite Highlight & why?
Highlight is one of my favourite makeup products, I love them and have good few but I always find myself reaching for The balm Mary Lou Manizer. A close second would be Becca Champagne Pop.
4. Favourite Eyeshadows & why
When I first started my courses I discovered Jaclyn Hill and spent way too many hours watching her tutorials on you tube. She used Make Up Geek eye shadows and it was the first time I had heard of them. At the time they had to be ordered from the American site but now they’re available on Beauty Bay. I ordered some and I was hooked!!! I love everything about them the range of colours, the pigment, how well they blend and they are affordable….still my favourite.
5. Favourite Lashes & why
My favourite lashes are Kara lashes. I love the style #605 and #43, they are on a really thin band and are so lightweight you don’t even know you are wearing them.
6. Favourite lip combo?
My favourite lip combo is Mac Soar lip liner and Mac Blankety lipstick. Blankety is a nude and when you use soar with it it picks up the pink undertones of the lipstick. I love it! Inglot HD Lip Tint in 32 is also a firm favourite of mine.
7. Do you prefer cream or powder contour or do you do both?
I definitely prefer powder contour, it’s just quicker! Very rarely do cream contour.
8. What is your go to brush/sponge to apply foundation?
I use the Blank Canvas F20 for foundation and a beauty blender to soften out and blend in around the hairline.
9. What is you favourite fluffy brush for blending eye shadow?
The Inglot 6ss, it’s amazing for blending in the crease! If it’s a blown out look I use a Blank Canvas E 26 or a Mac 217 to “blow” out the edges of the eye shadow. The same brush but the Blank Canvas is a fraction of the price of the Mac.
10. If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It would have to be mascara! Any mascara,I feel bald without it!!
11. What do find the most challenging about being an MUA, and managing your social media accounts?
TIME!!! I just never seem to have enough, I’d love to do more tutorials on Snapchat but it’s so hard to manage everything when you have children too.
12. Do you have a favourite saying?
It’s never too late to be who you are.
13. What one piece of advice would you give to a make up artist trying to get their name out there?
Get your qualifications first and then set up your social media and practice, practice practice. Everyone says it but it true!
14. What are your top 3 skincare products?
This is a tough one for me because even though I always loved make-up, I never looked after my skin and had absolutely no skincare routine until I started my courses and realised how important it is. My tutors were horrified!
Now, I’m a lot better (still not as good as i should be)! I really like No 7 skincare range and recently I’ve been loving the Nip and Fab range. Micellar water is great when your feeling lazy.
15. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
PUT THE TWEEZERS DOWN and step away from the mirror. Unfortunately, I lived through that time when someone decided less was more in the brow department and I plucked mine into a single line, they were horrific! Thankfully someone then invented semi permanent brows and my life was complete, I’m not even joking!
16. Are there any makeup artists either Irish or internationally who inspire you?
Maisie Lou MUA was my original inspiration. When I saw her make up for the first time I was blown away. I had never seen anyone in Waterford do such dramatic looks and I loved them. I mailed her to ask her for advice about getting into makeup and I’ll always remember what she said, “follow your dreams.” So i did!!! Although it was a few years later before I got the chance.
I love Jeanette Cronin and Anne-Marie Make Up Artist…both are pure make up perfection!
Abroad I love Makeup with Jah, she works for Inglot in Australia and, of course, Plouise, Stacy Marie makeup and my first love Jaclyn hill ha ha…
17. Are there any women in business who inspire you?
Denise from Pelo Hairdressing is amazing!!! She runs a business while raising a family and is going through IVF (I also looove anything to do with babies) I admire any woman who can maintain that life work balance.
18. What is the one makeup tool you just couldn’t live without?
Probably my 31 t lngot liner brush, I have about 16 of them. I use it for brows and liner.
19. What is your favourite makeup look?
I love dramatic eyes and, a nude lip but then I also love wings, and a red lip because I love the whole vintage look. It depends on what mood I’m in.
20. What is you biggest achievement to date in your career?
I think to be asked to do wedding makeup for the first time is my highlight. It’s such an important day in someone’s life and to be part of that is amazing. I love the whole buzz in the house that morning and to be invited in to their home on that special day is an honor.
21. Do you have any makeup regrets?
OMG too many to name, silver shimmer in your crease is never a good look or drawing on a fake beauty spot!
22. What do you think are the most over rated and under rated make up products on the market?
Overrated would be the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and underrated would be Freedom Brow Pomade.
23. What are your makeup must haves in your bag on a night out?
I used to bring out a bag full of make up with me on a night out but once I’d have a few drinks I didn’t care what I looked like, so I’d end up never using any of it, so now I just bring a lippy.
24. Is there any product that’s relatively inexpensive that you swear by?
The red lip liner in the Penney’s PS Range is much better than a Mac one I have.
25. And last but not least, could you share with us your favourite makeup tip or trick?
When I’m doing a look with a wing I’m really messy with the eye shadow and bring it down low, then when I add my wing I use the pointed Penney’s cotton buds dipped in eye makeup remover to clean up and get a really sharp wing.
Loved, loved, loved that Q&A, and as usual I’ve added loads to my “NEED LIST”. I really have to get the Make Up Forever HD Foundation for dry/dehydrated skin. Joanne Larby, also recommended it at a recent event!! Also, the Make Up Geek Eye Shadows have been on my list for aaaaaaages!!! Just want to say a huge thank you to Abigail for taking part in my series, I do ask a lot of questions, so I’m grateful she took the time out of her busy schedule.
